BDPA Philadelphia Seeking Help for Student Mentoring. Hayward West likes to say that he’ll work with anyone from the classroom to the boardroom.

“I wanna expose as many kids in our areas as we can to career opportunities in tech,” says West, president of the Philly chapter of the Black Data Processing Associates. The BDPA, founded in 1975 in Philadelphia, is a national organization with over 4000 members that aims to increase the diversity in technology careers through a mix of community service and career coaching. We’re one of the best kept secrets and I’m tying not to be a secret anymore.”

Local High School Students Place in Top Five in National Computer Competition. A team of five local high school students representing the St. Louis chapter of the Black Data Processing Associates placed in the top five in the High School Computer competition that took place July 31 in Philadelphia.

The students chosen to represent St. Louis were John Austin (McCleur North), Patrick McClendon (Clyde C. Miller), Christine Miller and Samantha Miller (both from Visitation Academy), and Akeem Shannon (DeSmet Jesuit High School).

Consortium for Enterprise Systems Management, 8/6/2010

Consortium announces scholarship for student members of the BDPA. The Consortium for Enterprise Systems Management is offering a scholarship for students members of the Black Developers Processing Associates. Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential and make an impact on their communities through service to others. Applicants need to be from South Carolina or North Carolina or attend a college in either of these two states.

Programming Students Pick Up 4th National Title. Can you say dynasty?  A team of Rochester high school students representing the local Black Data Processing Associates chapter chalked up its fourth straight national championship in a programming competition in Philadelphia last weekend.

"They have become kind of a dynasty," said Elise Pemberton of Rochester, parent of a former BDPA participant.

Local Students Win National Award. Five Rochester high school students just won first place at a national computer competition. The students are part of a national organization called Black Data Processing Associates, or BDPA.

There are about 60 students from southeast Minnesota who meet every Saturday for eight months of the year. At the end of the eight months, they select five of the top students to go to the national competition.
The BDPA helps minorities succeed in technology careers.

"In the school system today, there isn't enough computer science particularly to really prepare the workforce for what's needed," says Zack Garbow, an instructor for BDPA.

The Rochester team competed against 23 other teams across the country. Each of the students won a $2500 college scholarship, as well as a laptop from Hewlett Packard for coming in First Place.

Top Navy Officer Speaks at Black Data Processors Association Conference. Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead was the keynote speaker at the 32nd Annual Black Data Processors Association (BDPA) Conference July 31.  At the awards gala, the Navy was awarded the Epsilon award for best company with growing diversity.  The National BDPA President, Yvette Graham praised the efforts of companies around the nation for their contributions towards developing and sustaining a successful work environment in the information technology field and the involvement with young people for the future.

Rochester Post-Bulletin, 7/24/2010 (BDPA Regional Conference)

Community News: Data Processing Students Take First, Third. Teams from Rochester finished in first place and third place at the Black Data Processing Associates Minnesota regional youth competition July 10 at Century High School in Rochester. Teams from Rochester and the Twin Cities took part. The regional is considered a friendly warm-up for the national BDPA competition, which will be in Philadelphia at the end of July.
