At the recent Black Family Technology Awareness Week held in Brooklyn, NY, and hosted by the New York Chapter of the Black Data Processing Associates, Black Sci-Fi.com spoke with Denise R. Hamilton, director of education and community outreach. Hamilton conducted a workshop on the importance of cyber security and ensuring all aspects of our cyber identities are protected.

BDPA Educates with Black Family Technology Awareness Week. With every passing year, technology grows in leaps and bounds. From smart phones to I-Pads, it’s become a daily chore to keep up with each advance. Unfortunately, as with a host of things, those with less money are often left in the wake of such advances, playing catch up with each change. As highlighted by Aaron Smith, a Pew Internet Project Senior Research Specialist, in his September 2010 report, “Technology Trends Among People Of Color”, within the past decade, “African Americans have made up substantial ground in the last year when it comes to home broadband adoption.”

Black Family Technology Awareness Campaign. BDPA Cleveland presents Community Education Program during Black Family Awareness Campaign. The program was at Zion Chapel Baptist Church where Rev. George O. Stewart is the pastor. The program included education about technology (how to, computer safety, keeping your children safe and more), questions and answers, and break-out sessions for youth and adults.

Some of the featured BDPA speakers include past chapter president Beverly Peterson and founder Norman Mays.

First Annual BDPA IT-ology Scholarship Winner Announced. Congratulations to Jerron Jamerson, the winner of the first annual BDPA IT-oLogy scholarship. IT-oLogy is the new program of the Consortium for Enterprise Systems Management, a 501 (c)(3) organization formed in 2009 as a collaborative effort between IT companies and educational institutions to advance IT talent from the classroom to the boardroom.   Jamerson was selected based on the quality of his application, essay and letters of recommendation.  In his essay, Jerron wrote, “Continuous advances in computer science have helped to make business processes more efficient and technology more cost effective for consumers, while computer applications become more and more user-friendly.”  Jamerson is a senior at Phillip O’Berry Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina and plans to study Computer Science at South Carolina State University.

From 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, SCOPE - Science and Citizens Organized for Purpose and Exploration - will present its Science & Technology Night celebrating Black Family Technology Awareness Week, an international celebration to encourage more families to get the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century. SCOPE is partnering with organizations such as the St. Louis chapters of the Black Data Processing Associates and the National Society of Black Engineers to bring the full pathway from education to workforce to St. Louis families.

The Central Illinois chapter of Black Data Processing Associates will sponsor an information technology showcase Jan. 29 at Heartland Community College’s Workforce Development Center, 1500 W. Raab Road. The free event is open to students and community members.

“This event is for more than just minorities,” Javelin Lawrence, vice president of BDPA, said in a statement. “We hope to attract any and all high school students in McLean County who are interested in developing and sharing their IT expertise.”

GlobalGrind, done by Russell Simmons via a venture capital deal, is hanging on. Then you have BET.com and theRoot.com (founded by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.), neither of which is fully Black-owned ... There are sites for Black techies such as www.noiredigerati.com, though BlackGeeks.com is no more. But for the Black professionals, there are far and few between digital outlets such as BlackPlanet.com--until now, according to the founder of Goblackbook.com.

Bridging the Technology Gap Locally. A group that aims to bridge the technology gap is hosting its first competition in Bloomington-Normal. Black Data Processing Associates is putting on a citywide technology showcase at heartland Community College where high school students will show off their tech skills.

“It’s not just about (information technology), you have technology that extends into medicine, engineering, architecture,” Vice President Javelin Lawrence said. “It’s getting our students focused and getting them engaged a lot more than they are today.”

What is BDPA? BDPA (Black Data Processing Associates) was founded in 1975 by Earl A. Pace, Jr. and the late David Wimberly after the two met in Philadelphia to discuss their concerns about minorities in the data processing field. There was a lack of minorities in middle and upper management, low recruitment and poor preparation of minorities for these positions, and an overall lack of career mobility.
