The Circuit, formerly Greater Cincinnati Software Association, is contributing to BDPA's Student Information Technology Education & Scholarship (SITES) program -- which includes a high school-level computer camp, technology seminars and participation in a national BDPA student competition. The Cincinnati BDPA student team placed second in the national contest last year.

High School Level Citywide Computer Competition: Showcasing the Demand for a High School Computer Competition. The Black Data Processing Asscoiates has agreed to drive the implementation for this Citywide Computer Competition. The City of Cincinnati's role in the event can be to assist in promoting the event, to provide proclamations regarding the event to help in its promotion, and to offer City recognition as extra recognition to a select number of schools, students and educators who participate. We expect there will be opportunity for the Mayor and Council Members to be visible in their support of this initiative by attending scheduled activities.

I've seen two people with the same sales quotas, and all sorts of excuses were given for the non-minority not making his numbers, but when it came to the minority, they're saying "You should make that number.' Yet he was given the worst territory out there."

Investing in Computer Literacy. The pilot round of First Union Corp.'s eCommunitiesFirst initiative to raise computer and Internet literacy ended last week with 80% of the 550 people enrolled completing their classes ... In the pilot, that has meant the city of Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, BDPA-Information Technology Thought Leaders, UJAMMA, and University Park Baptist Church. But she says that the response has already been so strong that First Union is considering additional partners in Charlotte.

Compuware Team Takes First Place in National Black Data Processing Associates High School Competition. Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ:CPWR) announced today that the Detroit Public Schools' team captured first place in both the computer programming and the web design competitions in the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) High School Computer Competition. The Detroit team, consisting of four local high school students, received the highest score in the history of the competition, compiling 244 points of a possible 272.

Career Counsel. I have always maintained that the most important aspect of IT is the people. The technology is just a tool by which management furthers the interests of the business and enhances shareholder value based on knowledge gained from the data that they are able to turn into useful information. If we are to believe what we read about a shortage of individuals with IT skills, it appears that one of the most vexing problems that CIOs and their staff are having is the ability to recruit and retain people. Add to this the push for developing some level of diversity (other than H-1B candidates) throughout the enterprise. What advice would you give to CIOs who are looking to increase the level of diversity within their organizations? And is diversity something that CIOs are concerned about?

Making life compute: Volunteers spend weekends helping minority students learn computing skills at the University of Washington. Since January, volunteers with Black Data Processing Associates, a national non-profit organization, have been meeting with local high school and middle school students, providing them with a forum in which to nurture computer skills. The students are designing Web pages, programming in VISUAL BASIC, learning various hardware and software applications and gaining in-depth knowledge about the history of computing. Progress has often been remarkable, says Ann Robinson, founder of the local BDPA chapter.

Microsoft, BDPA Reach Out to Minority Communities. When Kristi Torgrimson started participating in a computer training camp at Microsoft in preparation for a national high-school computer competition sponsored by Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA), she was a pretty quiet kid. But it wasn't long before her instructors began to see changes in Kristi. Over the course of two summer sessions, she became more outgoing, more confident, and she even obtained a high-school internship at Microsoft. Kristi has twice been selected to be one of four students on the team representing the Seattle BDPA Chapter at the national competition. She still keeps in touch with one of her Microsoft instructors -- by e-mail, of course.
